American Arrested in Germany on Charges of Spying for China

Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office announced the arrest of an American citizen on Thursday, who is accused of spying for China. The suspect, identified only as Martin D., was apprehended in Frankfurt, where his home was also searched.

According to German authorities, Martin D., who had recently worked for the U.S. Armed Forces in Germany, is strongly suspected of offering to transmit sensitive U.S. military information to a Chinese intelligence service. The arrest follows an investigation by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, which revealed that earlier this year, the accused contacted Chinese government agencies with the offer of sharing classified military data.

The prosecutor’s office confirmed that the suspect had obtained the sensitive information through his role in the U.S. military, but did not provide further specifics on the nature of the data. A German news agency reported that it appeared Martin D. had not yet successfully transmitted any data to Chinese authorities before his arrest.

This incident is part of a growing trend of espionage cases linked to China, as German investigators have uncovered several individuals suspected of spying for China over the course of the year.
