American Citizen Freed After Two Years in Taliban Custody
George Glezmann, a 66-year-old American detained in Afghanistan for more than two years, has been released following diplomatic efforts led by Qatar. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Glezmann is now on his way back to the United States.
Glezmann’s release follows weeks of negotiations between U.S. and Taliban representatives, with Qatar playing a key role as a mediator. U.S. hostage envoy Adam Boehler and former Ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad traveled to Kabul to finalize the agreement.
Glezmann was held in solitary confinement for extended periods, with limited communication with his family. Reports indicate he faced severe health issues, including vision problems and untreated medical conditions.
Qatar has been instrumental in recent U.S.-Taliban negotiations, facilitating previous prisoner exchanges and humanitarian discussions. The release marks another significant diplomatic success, strengthening Qatar’s position as a key international mediator.
While Glezmann’s release is a relief for his family, concerns remain over other Americans still detained in Afghanistan. U.S. officials continue to push for further diplomatic breakthroughs, with Qatar playing a leading role in future negotiations.
