Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected president of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, despite growing concerns among diplomats that her controversial foreign policy.
The United Nations General Assembly confirmed Annalena Baerbock’s appointment as the president of its 80th session, scheduled to begin in September 2025. Baerbock, election marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Germany, which has long sought a greater leadership role within the UN system.
Reports from German media revealed that Baerbock’s candidacy faced internal resistance within Germany’s own Foreign Ministry. Some diplomats expressed concern that her outspoken positions—particularly her strong pro-Israel stance and vocal criticism of Russia—could jeopardize diplomatic ties with member states in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These regions are considered essential for Germany’s future ambitions, including its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Moscow was quick to condemn Baerbock’s elevation to the UNGA presidency. Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, described the move as a “slap in the face” to the international community. He cited Baerbock’s role in advocating for the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian representatives from World War II commemorations and highlighted her controversial public remarks regarding her grandfather’s affiliation with the Nazi SS.
The 80th session of the UN General Assembly is set to begin in September. As president, Baerbock will play a key role in moderating debates, setting the agenda, and representing the Assembly in global diplomatic forums.
