Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed in connection with deaths during violent protests in the country. According to international media reports, the decision comes after heightened unrest led by students, which ultimately forced Hasina out of power and into exile in India.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam described the court’s order as a “significant day,” announcing that the tribunal has directed authorities to arrest Sheikh Hasina and produce her in court on November 18. The charges stem from her alleged departure after large-scale protests that erupted in August.
Warrants Against 45 Others
The tribunal’s action extends beyond Sheikh Hasina, with warrants issued against 45 of her close associates, including several former cabinet members. These individuals are accused of complicity in various violations during Hasina’s administration.
Allegations of Human Rights Violations
Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure as Prime Minister was marred by allegations of extensive human rights abuses. Her government faced criticism over the detention of political opponents and numerous reports of extrajudicial killings.
Speaking to the media, Chief Prosecutor Islam emphasized that the tribunal’s ruling represents a crucial step toward justice, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to addressing alleged state-led oppression and holding those in power accountable.
