Australia has committed AUD 3 million to Pakistan for the “Climate Resilient and Adaptive Water Allocation” project, set to be completed over the next five years, concluding in 2029. The project aims to improve water allocation and management in Pakistan, enhancing resilience to climate change.
The Memorandum of Subsidiary Agreement for the project was signed on Friday by Secretary of Economic Affairs Division (EAD), Dr. Kazim Niaz, and Chief Executive of the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Prof. Wendy Umberger. This agreement follows the approval from Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Cheema.
According to the press release from EAD, the project will focus on improving canal water reliability by refining water allocation decisions through the Water Apportionment Accord Tool. This tool will now include mid-season planning and explore options for on-farm water storage, ultimately aiming for climate resilience, adaptive management, and equitable water use.
The initiative is expected to bring significant social and economic benefits to Pakistan’s farming communities. Dr. Kazim Niaz expressed gratitude to the Australian government for its continued support of Pakistan’s agricultural development efforts.
