SHUSHA — In a landmark development, Pakistan and Azerbaijan have signed a strategic partnership agreement under which Azerbaijan will invest $2 billion in Pakistan’s economic sector.
The agreement, finalized during Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Azerbaijan, reflects growing investor confidence in Pakistan’s economic opportunities under his leadership.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, alongside Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov, formalized the deal in the presence of the Prime Minister and a senior Pakistani delegation.
The accord was reached following a warm meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Khankandi. A more detailed and final agreement is expected to be signed when President Aliyev visits Pakistan in the near future.
Officials said the investment deal has elevated trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan to an unprecedented level, laying a foundation for stronger bilateral cooperation and a deepened brotherly partnership.
Prior to the Prime Minister’s trip, the Pakistani diplomatic mission, along with senior delegations, worked closely with their Azerbaijani counterparts to iron out details of the agreement.
Both countries also agreed to further exchanges to explore cooperation in various economic sectors.
Speaking to the media in Shusha, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the investment and expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for its commitment to Pakistan’s economy.
“This $2 billion investment is just the beginning — in the future, we expect these investments to grow even further,” he stated.
He also described his discussions with President Aliyev as highly productive, noting that member states at the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) summit agreed to expand collaboration in trade, investment, water resources, and other shared priorities.
The ECO member countries also pledged to cooperate on addressing the issue of rapidly melting glaciers in the region, the Prime Minister added.
