Azerbaijan Declares Airspace Closed to Attacks on Iran

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

BAKU — Azerbaijan has firmly ruled out any involvement in regional hostilities, with Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stating on Saturday that Baku will not allow its airspace or territory to be used for military operations against Iran or any other country.

Bayramov’s assurance came during a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, following Iran’s large-scale missile retaliation against Israel in response to recent airstrikes targeting its nuclear and military infrastructure.

Bayramov reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to peaceful diplomacy and regional stability. He denied allegations that Israel had used Azerbaijani airspace for surveillance or strikes against Iran—claims Tehran has raised in the past but which Baku has consistently refuted.

“Azerbaijan’s territory will not be a platform for hostilities against any nation,” Bayramov told his Iranian counterpart.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi defended Iran’s missile attacks on Israel, calling them a legitimate act of self-defense. The strikes were launched in response to Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion,” which targeted sensitive nuclear and military sites in Natanz, Fordow, and Tehran.

Araghchi described the Israeli operation as a “grave threat to international security,” warning of further “decisive responses” if provocations continue. He said the targeting of Iran’s nuclear facilities represented a breach of global norms and urged the international community to condemn Israel’s actions.

In retaliation, Iran launched “Operation True Promise 3,” firing hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israeli military positions. The latest exchange marks one of the most intense escalations in the ongoing shadow conflict between the two countries, raising fears of a broader regional war.

While Azerbaijan emphasized its neutral stance, the escalating crisis between Iran and Israel has prompted urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent further destabilization. Azerbaijan’s statement is seen as an attempt to avoid being drawn into the widening confrontation and to reassure both neighbors and global stakeholders of its impartiality.
