Brussels — Belgium has announced it will formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and impose strict sanctions on Israel over the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The declaration was made by Belgian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot, who posted on X (formerly Twitter):
Belgium’s announcement adds momentum to growing international recognition of Palestine. In July, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France would recognize a Palestinian state at the same UN session, scheduled for September 9–23 in New York.
Other nations, including Australia and Canada, have also pledged to recognize Palestine this month. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has signaled it will do the same unless Israel makes credible commitments toward ending the Gaza war and engaging in peace negotiations.
Minister Prévot underscored that the decision stems from the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and Israel’s violations of international law.
“Given Belgium’s obligations under international law, including preventing any risk of genocide, the government had to adopt strong measures to pressure both Israel and Hamas,” Prévot explained, according to Media.
he move sparked immediate criticism from Israel and the United States, both arguing that unilateral recognition of Palestine would serve as a “reward for Hamas” and derail ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza.
