PHNOM PENH – Cambodia has announced it will formally nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his instrumental role in brokering a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand following five days of deadly border clashes.
Speaking at a press briefing, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol credited Trump’s timely diplomatic intervention for ending the worst violence between the two Southeast Asian nations in over a decade.
“We acknowledge President Trump’s great efforts for peace and believe he fully deserves this honor,” Chanthol stated.
At least 43 people lost their lives and more than 300,000 civilians were displaced during the recent conflict, which spanned a 200-kilometer stretch of the contentious border region.
According to diplomatic sources in Bangkok and Phnom Penh, a personal phone call from Trump to Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai over the weekend was pivotal. Prior to the call, Thailand had reportedly declined mediation offers from Malaysia and China, insisting on bilateral talks only.
Trump’s intervention changed the trajectory of the standoff. The U.S. President warned that Washington would suspend trade talks with both countries until the violence ceased, prompting both governments to open direct communication channels.
Within 48 hours, the foreign ministries of Thailand and Cambodia agreed to negotiate. The peace agreement was ultimately signed in Malaysia, with the presence of leaders from all three nations—Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia—on Monday.
Cambodia becomes the third country in recent months to announce a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Trump, following similar endorsements by Pakistan and Israel. In June, Pakistan praised Trump’s role in de-escalating tensions with India, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated him for his mediation efforts in the Middle East.
The Nobel Peace Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious honors, is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to international diplomacy and peace-building.
