Canada and Mexico Retaliate Against U.S. significantly increasing tariffs on American goods.
In response to the United States’ decision to impose additional tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, both Canada and Mexico have announced countermeasures, significantly increasing tariffs on American goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada would impose a 25% retaliatory tariff on select U.S. imports. The first phase will see tariffs applied to $30 billion CAD worth of American products, followed by additional duties on $125 billion CAD worth of goods over the next three weeks.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed her Minister of Economy to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to safeguard Mexico’s economic interests against U.S. imports.
These countermeasures come in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent order, which imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods entering the United States.
Economic analysts warn that these moves could escalate trade tensions and disrupt North American business relations. However, both Canada and Mexico have made it clear that they are committed to protecting their economies and will take all necessary steps to ensure fair trade practices.
