Chaos Erupts in Uganda’s Parliament as MPs Clash Over Bill

Uganda’s Parliament was thrown into chaos on Thursday as a physical altercation broke out among lawmakers during a discussion on the National Coffee Amendment Bill 2024.

The incident occurred when MP Anthony Akol punched his colleague, Francis Zake, after a heated exchange. Zake was injured in the attack and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment. The dispute began when Zake protested the presence of firearms in the chamber, brought in by the Speaker’s security team.

Following the altercation, a total of 12 MPs, including Akol and Zake, were suspended for three parliamentary sessions. The incident has sparked widespread debate about the conduct of lawmakers and the security protocols within the parliament.
