China has officially expanded its 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy to include citizens from 55 countries, aiming to strengthen international travel, business cooperation, and tourism. The policy took effect on Thursday, marking a significant step in China’s post-pandemic recovery strategy.
The expanded visa-free transit initiative enables eligible travelers to enter China without a visa if they are transiting to a third country. Visitors can stay in the country for up to 10 days, provided they hold a valid passport and a confirmed onward ticket.
This initiative is designed to simplify travel, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and attract short-term tourists and business professionals from around the world.
China’s decision to include Indonesia in the policy is expected to enhance bilateral ties in tourism, trade, and investment. Other newly eligible countries include Russia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and several European and Latin American nations.
In total, 55 countries are now covered under the expanded policy, representing a broad geographic mix aimed at maximizing the global reach of the program.
Visa-free transit allows travelers from select nations to stay in China for up to 10 days without needing a visa—if they are en route to a third country or region. Key requirements include:
* A valid passport from one of the 55 eligible countries
* A confirmed onward ticket to a third destination
* Entry and exit through one of the 60 approved Chinese ports
* Stay limited to designated cities or regions for up to 240 hours
This streamlined entry option benefits short-term visitors and global travelers with multi-destination itineraries.
Approved ports include major international airports and seaports in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu.
