China Assumes UN Security Council Presidency for February
China has taken over the rotational presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the month of February, succeeding Algeria.
Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized that China views this responsibility as an important duty and is committed to promoting solidarity among Security Council members while ensuring the Council fulfills its mandate.
Key Priorities for China’s Presidency

- Palestine Conflict: Fu noted that while a ceasefire is in place in Gaza, the situation remains fragile. Rising tensions in the West Bank will be closely monitored.
- China is consulting with Security Council members on possible actions regarding the ongoing crisis.
- The Israeli ban on UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, will also be reviewed.
- African Security Concerns
- The Council will address conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, Libya, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
- China supports a ceasefire resolution proposed by a Council member concerning the DRC.
- High-Level Open Debate (Feb 18)
- China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will preside over a high-level debate focused on reaffirming multilateralism and exploring reforms in global governance.
China’s UNSC presidency will last through February, before Denmark takes over in March.
