China Launches International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) to Promote Peaceful Global Dispute Resolution

Hong Kong ………China officially launched the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong on May 30, 2025, marking a significant milestone in international dispute resolution. Over 30 countries, including Pakistan, Indonesia, Belarus, and Cuba, joined the initiative, which seeks to offer a peaceful, consensus-based alternative to traditional litigation for settling cross-border disputes. Unlike judicial bodies such as the International Court of Justice, IOMed focuses on voluntary mediation, emphasizing mutual understanding and diplomatic dialogue to resolve international conflicts.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that IOMed reflects China’s vision of promoting cooperation over confrontation in global affairs. He noted that the organization will help fill the institutional gap in international mediation, allowing states, individuals, and businesses to resolve disputes without resorting to adversarial legal battles.
