Beijing : China has strongly condemned what it describes as India’s interference in its internal religious affairs, responding to statements made by an Indian official concerning the Dalai Lama’s successor.
Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong firmly rejected the Indian remarks, arguing they represent a direct infringement on Chinese sovereignty and breach diplomatic protocol.
“The Dalai Lama’s lineage was historically established within Tibet, which is part of China,” Xu said in a statement. “The reincarnation process for living Buddhas is clearly defined by Chinese law, and no external force can interfere.”
Xu stressed that China respects religious freedom and cultural autonomy but reaffirmed that any religious appointments or reincarnation matters remain an exclusive prerogative of the Chinese government.
He warned that foreign governments or organizations would not be allowed to meddle in what he called China’s internal religious matters, and described India’s statements as a serious challenge to Beijing’s sovereignty.
The dispute adds to already strained ties between China and India, where long-standing border tensions and regional rivalries continue to complicate bilateral relations.
