A deadly clash between Indian security forces and Naxal insurgents unfolded late Saturday night in the dense forests of Abujhmarh, Chhattisgarh, leaving four rebels and one police officer dead.
Security forces encountered the rebels during a routine patrol in the heavily forested region, which has long been a Naxal stronghold. Inspector General of Police Sundarraj confirmed that the bodies of four insurgents, dressed in distinctive combat uniforms, were recovered. The deceased officer’s sacrifice was also acknowledged as operations to track fleeing rebels continue.
The Naxal insurgency, which began in 1967 and draws inspiration from Mao Zedong’s revolutionary philosophy, has been a persistent challenge in resource-rich but underdeveloped areas of central India. The conflict has claimed over 10,000 lives and focuses on demands for land rights, jobs, and resource-sharing for marginalized communities.
Home Minister Amit Shah, in a stern warning issued last year, called on the rebels to surrender or face intensified military action. The government has ramped up counter-insurgency efforts, with 2024 seeing 287 rebels killed, 1,000 arrested, and 837 surrendering voluntarily.
