Denmark Rejects US Pressure Over Greenland Ahead of High-Profile Visit
Denmark has strongly opposed what it calls “unacceptable pressure” from the United States regarding Greenland, ahead of an unapproved visit by a high-profile US delegation. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Denmark will resist any external influence on Greenland’s governance and affairs.
The US delegation, scheduled to visit Greenland from Thursday to Saturday, will be led by Usha Vance, wife of US Vice President JD Vance, alongside White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. The Danish and Greenlandic governments were not consulted about the visit, further escalating tensions.
Frederiksen emphasized that the visit cannot be considered private, given the involvement of senior US officials. Meanwhile, the White House National Security Council defended the trip, stating that its purpose is to “learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people.”
Greenland, a strategically important Arctic territory, has long been of interest to the US due to its natural resources and military significance. This latest move has reignited concerns over Washington’s increasing influence in the region, following past efforts to strengthen US-Greenland ties.
Denmark’s strong response signals a firm stance against foreign interference, setting the stage for heightened diplomatic discussions as the US delegation arrives later this week.
