Qatar will host an emergency Arab-Islamic summit on September 14–15 to forge a unified response to Israel’s airstrike in Doha that killed senior Hamas leaders, a move drawing strong condemnation across the Arab and Islamic world.
Qatar’s state news agency confirmed the gathering, which will bring together Arab and Islamic leaders to address Israel’s unprecedented strike on the Qatari capital earlier this week. The air raid targeted Hamas’ top command as they discussed a US-backed Gaza ceasefire plan, heightening tensions and raising fears of regional escalation.
Arab League spokesman Gamal Roshdy said the timing of the summit reflects “an Arab and Islamic recognition of the gravity of Israel’s assault on Qatar” and the urgent need to uphold international law. He warned that without a collective stance, the region risks sliding deeper into conflict.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani confirmed in a CNN interview that Doha is actively consulting regional partners on possible countermeasures. He emphasized that “a regional reaction is under consultation,” signaling that the summit could produce concrete steps rather than symbolic statements.
Diplomatic sources said leaders will also discuss a roadmap for coordinated Arab action, based on a Saudi-Egyptian initiative adopted earlier this month. The framework rejects any durable cooperation under ongoing Israeli occupation or annexation threats and calls for renewed efforts to end the occupation of Arab territories.
The Doha summit comes just days before the UN General Assembly session in New York, where Arab and Islamic leaders are expected to press for stronger international accountability. Sources say participants aim to issue “firm decisions” backed by broad regional consensus.
Cairo-based analyst Ahmed Youssef Ahmed argued that the summit should move beyond condemnations. “It must include punitive measures and candid discussions with Washington,” he said, highlighting that Israel targeted a state seen by the US as a key ally and home to its largest regional military base.
US President Donald Trump expressed rare criticism of Israel, saying he was “not happy” with the strike on Qatar. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt added that the attack ran contrary to Trump’s stated objective of advancing peace in Gaza.
Observers note that the outcome of the Doha summit could influence both regional diplomacy and the broader debate at the United Nations, where Palestinian statehood and Middle East peace remain high on the agenda.
