Drone attack on Sudan mosque, at least 80 worshippers martyred, army blames RSF

Cairo — At least 80 worshippers were martyred on Friday after a drone strike hit a mosque in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur region, according to the Sudanese army and local aid groups. The attack, which occurred during early morning prayers, has been blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The mosque was completely destroyed, with fears that the death toll will rise as bodies remain buried beneath the rubble. A member of the local aid group Emergency Response Rooms, speaking anonymously due to fear of RSF retaliation, confirmed that rescue efforts were ongoing.

In an official statement, the Sudanese army mourned the victims and accused the RSF of deliberately targeting civilians.

The strike comes amid escalating violence in Darfur, where both the army and RSF have intensified their offensives. Just last month, more than 40 civilians were killed in an RSF assault on a displacement camp.

Local activists from the Resistance Committees in El Fasher released videos showing the mosque reduced to rubble, with scattered bodies in the debris. While independent verification remains difficult, aid workers say the destruction highlights the increasing brutality of the conflict.

The civil war, which began in April 2023, has caused catastrophic human suffering. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 40,000 people have been killed and at least 12 million displaced, leaving millions facing famine.

The Darfur Victims Support Organization reported that the attack occurred around 5 a.m. local time on Daraga al-Oula street in El Fasher. With most international organizations having withdrawn due to security risks, independent assessments remain scarce.
