Egyptian Parliament Approves Saudi-Egyptian Supreme Coordination Council to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

The Egyptian Parliament, led by Speaker Dr. Hanafy El Gebali, has officially approved the formation of the Saudi-Egyptian Supreme Coordination Council, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations across various sectors.

The decision follows discussions between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo last October. The council, initially approved by the Egyptian government late last year, is designed to intensify communication and strengthen bilateral collaboration in political, economic, trade, investment, and security affairs.

The council will serve as an overarching framework for coordinating policies, fostering economic partnerships, and promoting regional stability. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty previously emphasized that the initiative aims to expand cooperation in critical sectors, including:

  • Trade & Investment: Facilitating Saudi investments in Egypt and enhancing private sector collaboration.
  • Security & Defense: Strengthening counterterrorism efforts and combating organized crime.
  • Infrastructure & Technology: Advancing cooperation in digital transformation, telecommunications, and energy.
  • Education & Healthcare: Promoting knowledge exchange and medical advancements.
  • Agriculture & Environmental Sustainability: Encouraging joint projects for sustainable development.

The council will replace the Joint Higher Committee Agreement and will include ministers and officials from both countries, who will meet regularly in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, with provisions for emergency meetings when necessary.

A Step Toward Regional Stability

Ahmed Fouad Abaza, Chairman of the Egyptian Parliament’s Arab Affairs Committee, highlighted that the council would play a pivotal role in coordinating diplomatic efforts on regional and international issues. He emphasized that the strategic alliance between Saudi Arabia and Egypt is crucial for maintaining security and economic growth in the region.

With its formation now approved, the Saudi-Egyptian Supreme Coordination Council is set to usher in a new era of strengthened bilateral relations, reinforcing both nations’ positions as key players in the Middle East’s political and economic landscape.
