KARACHI: Pakistani security forces have neutralized at least eight militants in two separate intelligence-based operations conducted in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), officials confirmed on Saturday, as the nation confronts an escalating wave of militancy along its western frontier.
In Lakki Marwat district of KP, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) along with local police raided a suspected militant hideout, sparking a fierce gunbattle. Three militants belonging to the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Tipu Gul group were killed in the operation, with security forces recovering three Kalashnikov rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from the site.
“These terrorists were actively targeting law enforcement officials and had been involved in several attacks on CTD and district police personnel,” the CTD said in an official statement.
Meanwhile, near Taunsa Sharif in Punjab, CTD and police personnel gunned down five TTP militants whom the Interior Ministry described as “Indian-backed terrorists” planning to carry out attacks.
“Punjab police and the CTD have foiled the evil plans of Khawarij terrorists,” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated. “We will relentlessly pursue these agents of Fitna Al-Hindustan wherever they hide.”
Pakistan has experienced a sharp surge in militant activity, particularly in its western regions bordering Afghanistan.
Just a day earlier, the Pakistani military announced the killing of at least 30 “Indian-sponsored” militants attempting to cross into Pakistan from Afghan territory.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused India of financing extremist groups and has urged Afghanistan to prevent its soil from being used for anti-Pakistan activities. Both New Delhi and Kabul deny these allegations.
