Tallinn – Estonia has strongly protested against Russia after three Russian fighter jets illegally entered Estonian airspace on Friday, sparking fresh security concerns across Europe and prompting Tallinn to consult its NATO allies.
According to the Estonian Foreign Ministry, the aircraft remained in Estonian skies for 12 minutes before departing, making it one of the most serious incidents in recent years.
“This year, Russia has already violated our airspace four times, but today’s incursion, involving three fighter aircraft, is unprecedentedly brazen,” Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement.
Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur announced that the government will begin consultations with NATO allies under Article 4, which allows member states to request urgent discussions when their security is threatened.
The move comes just over a week after NATO forces downed Russian drones over Poland, underscoring fears that the Ukraine war could spill over into alliance territory.
European Leaders Condemn Russia
- Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief and Estonia’s former prime minister, condemned the act as “an extremely dangerous provocation” that escalates tensions in the region.
- “We must show no weakness, because weakness only invites Russia to push further,” Kallas warned, adding that Moscow’s actions threaten not just Ukraine, but all neighboring states.
Other European governments have also voiced alarm following a series of cross-border incidents, including drone crashes and airspace violations, since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Estonia, together with fellow Baltic nations Latvia and Lithuania and neighboring Poland, has been among the strongest European backers of Ukraine’s defense against Russia, calling for tougher sanctions and increased NATO presence in the region.
