ISLAMABAD – Ethiopia and Pakistan have launched a landmark collaboration focused on food security, climate change mitigation, and green economic growth through the inaugural Green Legacy Forum.
The forum, jointly hosted by the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), brought together a wide array of agriculture experts, climate researchers, and policy stakeholders from both countries to promote knowledge exchange and environmental cooperation.
Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, highlighted the deep commonalities between the two nations, both being agriculture-dependent economies that face heightened threats from climate change and resource degradation.
Dr. Abdula shared Ethiopia’s remarkable journey to agricultural transformation, citing its flagship initiatives—Green Legacy and Yelemat Tirufat (Bounty of the Basket)—which have played a pivotal role in achieving food self-sufficiency.
“Ethiopia has planted over 40.5 billion seedlings, increasing forest cover from 17% to 23% and dramatically boosting both agricultural and livestock productivity,” he said.
Federal Secretary for National Food Security and Research, Amir Mohyuddin, proposed the integration of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy with Pakistan’s Green Pakistan Program, paving the way for bilateral research partnerships, technical collaboration, and shared innovation.
He stressed the importance of leveraging mutual strengths to address food security challenges, build climate-resilient agricultural systems, and develop scalable eco-friendly technologies.
To symbolize the growing alliance, the Ambassador and the Federal Secretary jointly inaugurated the Green Legacy Park at the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC). They also planted fruit-bearing tree saplings, representing their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Key focus areas under this new cooperation include:
- Sustainable land and water management
- Reforestation and afforestation initiatives
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Knowledge transfer and capacity building
- Joint action plans for climate change adaptation
Dr. Muhammad Azam Khan, Director General of NARC, stressed the urgency of international cooperation in the fight against global warming, noting that this partnership could serve as a model for other developing nations.
