Brussels/New York — The European Union (EU) has pushed back against a proposal from US President Donald Trump to impose steep tariffs on goods from China and India, insisting that tariffs are not used as a sanctions tool within the bloc, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The request was raised by Trump during a sanctions coordination meeting with EU officials in Washington on Tuesday. The US president argued that higher tariffs on Chinese and Indian goods would discourage both countries from supporting Russia’s economy and reduce India’s imports of Russian oil.
While rejecting Trump’s tariff proposal, EU diplomats confirmed the bloc is finalizing its 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The measures are expected to target foreign companies accused of helping Moscow circumvent restrictions. However, divisions among member states make it unlikely that new curbs will directly affect oil or gas imports, which remain politically sensitive.
Reports suggest the EU has also debated possible penalties against China and other third countries over their role in facilitating Russian energy exports. According to Financial Times, preliminary discussions that began on September 7 included repeated mentions of secondary sanctions against Beijing, though consensus has yet to be reached.
Analysts note that Europe’s reluctance to embrace tariffs underscores a policy gap between Brussels and Washington over how to pressure Russia, with the EU preferring targeted sanctions while Trump pushes for broader economic measures.
