The European Union (EU) has announced a €700,000 humanitarian aid package for Pakistan in response to the severe flooding and landslides that have led to significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods across the country.
This aid is designed to address the immediate needs of the most vulnerable communities in the hardest-hit areas, particularly in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh, as outlined in a recent news release.
Taheeni Thammannagoda, who manages the EU’s humanitarian programmes in Pakistan, expressed heartfelt condolences for the lives lost due to the unprecedented monsoon rains, which have tested the resilience of communities nationwide. She emphasized that the EU is committed to supporting humanitarian partners on the ground to provide essential lifesaving assistance to affected families.
The funds will be directed through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The emergency response will prioritize multi-sectoral support, including water and sanitation, temporary shelter, and vital relief supplies.
This latest aid package builds on the €11 million in humanitarian assistance already allocated by the EU for 2024, aimed at supporting disaster preparedness and response efforts in Pakistan.
