BRUSSELS — The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy as the path forward to address Iran’s nuclear ambitions, following emergency talks between the bloc’s 27 foreign ministers on the rising conflict between Israel and Iran.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said after the high-level video conference that all member states agreed on the urgent need to prevent further escalation.
Europe has remained largely sidelined in the latest flare-up between Iran and Israel, with Israeli strikes inside Iranian territory triggering global alarm. Kallas said the EU must reclaim its role, especially after the collapse of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—which was abandoned by the Trump administration during his first term.
While Washington had engaged in fresh negotiations with Tehran earlier this year, those talks have now stalled following recent hostilities.
“Since Iran-U.S. talks are now at a standstill, Europe has an opportunity to lead again,” Kallas said, confirming she had held discussions with Iran’s foreign minister and several key EU counterparts on Monday.
Amid mounting concerns for civilian safety, the EU is also coordinating evacuation efforts for European citizens in affected Middle Eastern countries. Kallas noted that some member states had already mobilized aircraft, while others were receiving logistical support.
Kallas added that she had received clear assurances from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Washington will not join Israel’s military strikes on Iran.
“It is in nobody’s interest to expand this conflict,” she said, quoting Rubio’s stance.
