European Leaders Reject Lifting Sanctions on Russia, Send Clear Message to Trump

European leaders have firmly stated that now is not the time to lift sanctions on Russia, pushing back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting a review of restrictive measures.

During a high-level EU summit in Brussels, officials reiterated that sanctions imposed on Moscow due to its ongoing war in Ukraine and alleged human rights violations must remain in place. They emphasized that any easing of restrictions would only come if Russia demonstrates a clear commitment to peace and international law.

“We stand united in our stance against Russian aggression,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “Sanctions are a necessary tool to deter further violations and to support Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty.”

President Trump recently hinted at reconsidering some of the penalties placed on Russia, citing economic concerns and the need for diplomatic engagement. However, European leaders remain firm in their position, warning that premature sanctions relief could embolden Moscow and weaken Western leverage in ongoing negotiations.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed this sentiment, stressing that any changes to current policies must be tied to concrete actions from the Kremlin, including a withdrawal from occupied Ukrainian territories.

The EU’s coordinated response signals a growing divide between Washington and its European allies over how to handle relations with Russia. While the White House has not yet officially announced any policy shifts, Trump’s comments have sparked concerns about transatlantic unity in addressing the crisis.

With tensions still high and no diplomatic breakthroughs in sight, European leaders are determined to maintain pressure on Russia, making it clear that lifting sanctions at this time is not an option.
