Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina Indicted Crime for Human Rights Abuses in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has been formally indicted by the International Crimes Tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity, marking a dramatic turn in the country’s political landscape following her government’s ouster last year.

The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh has issued an indictment against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, accusing her of orchestrating crimes against humanity during her extended tenure in office. The indictment, announced in a live-streamed court session, also names the former Interior Minister and the former Inspector General of Police as co-accused.

The charges stem from allegations of systemic human rights violations and abuse of state power to suppress political dissent. Hasina, who served as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for nearly 21 years, including an uninterrupted 16-year stretch, faced mounting opposition and protests before her government was ultimately dissolved in 2024.

The indictment follows months of political turmoil and civil unrest that culminated in Hasina’s removal from power. Human rights organizations had long raised concerns about extrajudicial actions and the repression of opposition parties under her leadership.

In a separate but politically significant development, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has restored the legal status of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s largest Islamist political party. The party had been deregistered by Hasina’s administration over a decade ago, citing its alleged anti-constitutional activities.

The court’s decision nullifies the previous cancellation, allowing Jamaat-e-Islami to once again register with the Election Commission and participate in national elections. According to Election Commission counsel Tawhidul Islam, legal procedures will now proceed in compliance with the new ruling.
