Nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki has been elected President of Poland, marking a significant victory for the far-right and a major challenge to Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European Union policies.
Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian and former amateur boxer, secured 50.89% of the vote in Sunday’s closely contested election, narrowly defeating liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who garnered 49.11%. The result was confirmed early Monday, reversing earlier exit polls that had favored Trzaskowski.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and French far-right leader Marine Le Pen were among the first to congratulate Nawrocki. Orbán hailed his win as a “fantastic victory,” while Le Pen called it a “disavowal of the Brussels oligarchy,” praising his resistance to the EU’s “authoritarian policies and federalist ambitions.”
Although the Polish presidency is largely ceremonial, it carries significant influence, particularly through the power to veto legislation—a tool Nawrocki is expected to use. With Tusk’s pro-European coalition lacking a 60% parliamentary supermajority, Nawrocki’s vetoes could severely hinder reforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
The election campaign highlighted deep political divisions. Trzaskowski supported liberalizing abortion laws and introducing LGBTQ+ civil partnerships, while Nawrocki campaigned on conservative Catholic values and is expected to oppose such measures. His presidency is anticipated to align Poland more closely with Eurosceptic leaders, exacerbating tensions within the EU amid geopolitical and economic crises.
