The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is set to initiate a strict crackdown on non-filers starting October 1, with potential restrictions on international travel and other penalties under consideration, according to official sources.
A senior FBR official confirmed that this aggressive enforcement action is part of efforts to meet the annual tax target of Rs. 13,000 billion. As part of the campaign, millions of non-filers will receive final tax notices.
In addition to travel bans, the FBR is also exploring measures such as disconnecting mobile phone SIMs, electricity, and gas connections of non-filers. A proposal is being evaluated to restrict non-filers from purchasing properties and vehicles.
Taxpayers have been urged to file their returns by September 30, 2024. Those who fail to meet the deadline will be subject to double withholding taxes. The FBR also plans to conduct large-scale audits post-deadline.
Sources indicate that significant tax collection plans are in place for 10 key sectors, including retail, wholesale, transport, real estate, construction, healthcare, and education. The FBR has complete access to citizens’ transaction data and will impose heavy fines on tax evaders or those providing incorrect information.
