The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has greenlit measures to repatriate Pakistani citizens stranded in Syria amidst the ongoing crisis. The plan involves transporting them to Pakistan through Beirut.
A briefing revealed that of the 250 Pakistani pilgrims in Syria, 79 have already reached Beirut and are awaiting flights to Pakistan. Similarly, seven out of approximately 20 educators and students stranded in Syria have also arrived in Beirut. Officials assured that Pakistan’s embassies in Syria and Lebanon are fully engaged to ensure the safe and swift return of all affected citizens.
The cabinet also sanctioned agreements with eight bagasse-based independent power producers (IPPs), aimed at reducing electricity tariffs. These agreements are expected to save the national exchequer PKR 238 billion. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) will seek NEPRA’s approval to implement the reduced tariffs.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of these agreements, highlighting their potential to lower electricity costs for consumers and alleviate financial burdens on the public. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing public welfare and national interest.
