FIFA Expands Women’s World Cup to 48 Teams from 2031; US and UK Set to Host Future Tournaments
Report by Safarti Tarjuman Sports Desk
FIFA has announced the expansion of the Women’s World Cup to 48 teams starting with the 2031 tournament, following unanimous approval from the FIFA Council on Friday. The decision marks a historic step in line with the global growth of the women’s game.
The 2031 edition is expected to be hosted by the United States, while the United Kingdom is poised to host the 2035 tournament. Although final confirmation is pending, both bids faced no competition, making ratification a formality.
FIFA said the tournament grew from 24 to 32 teams in 2023 and will retain the 32-team format for the 2027 edition in Brazil, where the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro is among the confirmed venues.
The UK’s 2035 tournament will likely involve more host cities and stadiums. Established venues such as Wembley Stadium, Hampden Park, and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff are expected to be joined by upcoming projects like Manchester United’s proposed new stadium and Birmingham City’s planned 62,000-seater ground, pending construction timelines.
In addition to the World Cup announcement, FIFA has also approved a landmark three-pillar strategy for supporting Afghan women’s football. The initiative includes the creation of a dedicated refugee team composed of Afghan female players who were evacuated following the Taliban’s return to power.
The plan focuses on three areas: project-based support for women and girls within Afghanistan, diplomatic engagement with authorities in the country, and the establishment of competitive opportunities for Afghan players abroad. The refugee team will begin with a one-year pilot phase, participating in FIFA-organized matches and tournaments while ensuring player safety and mental well-being.
However, due to the delayed approval, the team will not be eligible for the 2027 World Cup, as Afghanistan is not participating in the qualifying campaign for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
