Northern Gaza, Beit Hanoun: TEL AVIV – In a significant escalation of the ongoing Israeli ground campaign in Gaza, five Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded on Monday night following a powerful roadside bomb explosion in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, the Israeli military confirmed early Tuesday.
According to IDF sources, the soldiers were conducting a foot patrol operation around 10 p.m. when a device planted by Palestinian fighters detonated along the roadside. The explosion occurred in a known conflict zone where Israeli forces have faced repeated resistance.
The fallen soldiers were all between 20 and 28 years old, with four of them serving in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade, a unit primarily composed of ultra-Orthodox troops. One reservist served in the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade.
* Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20, Jerusalem
* Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, Jerusalem
* Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, Jerusalem
* Staff Sgt. Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, Beit Shemesh
* Sgt. First Class (res.) Benyamin Asulin, 28, Haifa
The military extended condolences to their families and hailed their service as part of Israel’s ongoing ground campaign in Gaza.
An initial military investigation suggests that the roadside IED was part of a coordinated ambush. Following the blast, Israeli forces attempting to retrieve the casualties came under automatic gunfire from nearby positions.
IDF officials described the incident as one of the deadliest in recent weeks and acknowledged the growing risk of asymmetric urban warfare tactics being employed by Palestinian groups.
