Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has passed away at the age of 88. Simitis, who led Greece from 1996 to 2004, was found unconscious at his country residence in Agioi Theodoroi and was rushed to Corinth hospital, where doctors were unable to revive him.
A prominent academic and politician, Simitis was known for his pivotal role in Greece’s accession to the eurozone and his efforts to push for Cyprus’ membership in the European Union. Under his leadership, Greece made significant strides on the international stage, particularly in the areas of economic integration and European diplomacy.
Simitis’ funeral will take place on 9 January at the Metropolis of Athens, and will be conducted with the honours reserved for a serving Prime Minister. In recognition of his invaluable contribution to the country, the Greek government has declared a four-day period of national mourning.
Born on 23 June 1936, Simitis served as the leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and held the office of Prime Minister for eight years. His legacy remains marked by the strengthening of Greece’s position within Europe.
