Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Arrested on ICC Warrant Over Drug War Killings
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila’s international airport on Tuesday following an order from the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial anti-drug campaign, the Philippine government confirmed.
Duterte was taken into custody after arriving from Hong Kong. According to a statement from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s office, the Philippine Prosecutor General served the ICC’s warrant upon his arrival, leading to his immediate detention.
The arrest caused a commotion at Villamor Airbase, where Duterte’s lawyers, aides, and supporters protested as they were allegedly prevented from accessing him. Senator Bong Go, a close ally of Duterte, condemned the move, calling it a violation of his constitutional rights.
The ICC’s warrant, a copy of which was obtained by the Associated Press, states that there are “reasonable grounds to believe” Duterte oversaw an attack on civilians that was widespread and systematic. The document highlights that thousands of people were killed over several years under his controversial drug war.
Despite Duterte’s refusal to acknowledge the ICC’s authority, the arrest signals a significant shift in Philippine leadership’s stance under Marcos Jr. It remains unclear whether Duterte will be extradited to The Hague or face trial within the country.
The international community is closely monitoring developments, with human rights groups welcoming the arrest, while Duterte’s supporters claim it is politically motivated persecution.
