France to Officially Recognize Palestinian Statehood at UN, Macron Declares

Report by “Safarti Tarjuman” International News Desk

Paris – French President Emmanuel Macron has officially announced that France will recognize the State of Palestine, a landmark decision set to be formalized during the United Nations General Assembly in September. The move, he emphasized, is rooted in the urgent need to halt the Gaza war and address the worsening humanitarian crisis.

In a public statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), President Macron said:

“There is no alternative. The urgent need today is to end the war in Gaza and to rescue the civilian population. Peace is possible.”

This recognition positions France as the most influential Western power to formally support Palestinian statehood and comes as part of increasing global pressure on Israel to cease military operations and facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza.

France joins over 140 UN member states that already recognize Palestine, including several European nations. Macron’s move is seen as a significant pivot in France’s Middle East policy, signaling dissatisfaction with the current status quo and a renewed push for a two-state solution.

While France has condemned the October 7 Hamas attacks and expressed solidarity with Israel, Macron has also criticized Israel’s military campaign, which has resulted in mass civilian casualties and a growing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Israeli leaders swiftly condemned the announcement. Defense Minister Israel Katz called the move a “surrender to terrorism,” claiming it undermines Israel’s security and national integrity.

Justice Minister Yariv Levin accused France of enabling terrorism, while former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett labeled the recognition a “moral failure” and “diplomatic disaster,” asserting that such gestures reward violence.

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana went so far as to brand Macron a “collaborator,” stating that the decision sends a dangerous message that “terrorism pays off.”

In a related development, the United States has withdrawn its Gaza ceasefire negotiation team from Doha, citing a lack of progress. Officials stated that Hamas “lacks the will” to finalize a deal.

The decision marks a turning point in US diplomatic efforts, underscoring growing frustration over the prolonged conflict and its mounting human cost.
