French Actor Gérard Depardieu Faces Trial for Sexual Assault Allegations
Renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu, 76, has gone on trial in Paris over allegations of sexual assault, marking a significant moment in France’s evolving #MeToo movement.
The case revolves around accusations from two women, whose identities remain undisclosed, regarding incidents that allegedly took place on the set of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) in 2021. Prosecutors claim Depardieu engaged in inappropriate and non-consensual physical contact, including groping and making obscene remarks. Witnesses reportedly observed at least one of the incidents.
Depardieu, who has consistently denied the allegations, appeared in court alongside his lawyer, Jérémie Assous, who dismissed the claims as baseless.
Outside the courthouse, demonstrators voiced support for the accusers, chanting, “We believe you.” The trial, expected to last three days, comes as France grapples with its response to sexual misconduct cases in the entertainment industry.
If convicted, Depardieu could face up to five years in prison and a €75,000 fine. The outcome of the trial is expected to have a lasting impact on France’s approach to holding high-profile figures accountable for allegations of sexual misconduct.
