WASHINGTON/OTTAWA — The Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers on Monday called for a return to negotiations to secure a lasting and verifiable agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear program, while also welcoming a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
In a joint statement, the G7 expressed support for efforts to ease tensions after former US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement last week to halt a conflict that erupted on June 13, when Israel carried out strikes against Iran.
That brief but fierce escalation had raised concerns about a wider regional war, following months of unrest sparked by Israel’s offensive in Gaza since October 2023.
“We urge the resumption of negotiations, resulting in a comprehensive, verifiable, and durable agreement on Iran’s nuclear program,” the G7 statement emphasized.
Since April, Iran and the United States have been engaged in indirect diplomatic contacts aimed at reviving a framework to limit Iran’s nuclear activities. Tehran has maintained that its program is peaceful, while Israel and its allies argue the country should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons capability.
The recent flare-up saw Washington targeting Iranian nuclear facilities in response to Iran’s attack on a US military base in Qatar, further intensifying calls for de-escalation.
The G7 ministers also condemned threats made against the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stressing their support for the watchdog’s impartial role in monitoring Iran’s nuclear commitments.
The ministers urged all parties to refrain from any actions that could destabilize the region further, highlighting the urgency of reducing tensions through dialogue.
