DOHA/GAZA/JERUSALEM — Indirect negotiations in Qatar aimed at achieving a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza are at an impasse, as Israeli and Palestinian sources confirm divisions over the extent of Israeli military withdrawal from the territory. Talks entered their seventh day on Saturday under a U.S.-backed proposal intended to halt months of conflict that have devastated the enclave.
As diplomatic efforts faltered, violence flared on the ground. Gaza health officials reported that 17 people were killed on Saturday after Israeli troops allegedly opened fire on crowds waiting for food aid. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with victims shot in the head and torso and families rushing bodies to Nasser Hospital, where they were wrapped in white shrouds.
The Israeli military acknowledged its forces had fired warning shots but said an internal review found no evidence of casualties caused by their troops. The United Nations has warned that the aid distribution system has repeatedly turned deadly, with around 800 civilians reportedly killed over six weeks in similar incidents.
Delegations from Israel and Hamas remain in Qatar attempting to finalize an agreement that would include a phased release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals, and negotiations toward a long-term settlement. However, the talks have highlighted deep mistrust and persistent disagreements over security guarantees and humanitarian access.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is worsening. Severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and clean water have forced thousands of civilians to crowd aid distribution sites despite the danger. International pressure is growing on both sides to agree to a ceasefire and avert further escalation that could destabilize the region and deepen the suffering of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.
