General Asim Munir Promoted to Field Marshal; Government Extends Air Chief Zaheer Babar Sidhu’s Tenure
In a landmark decision, the Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, recognizing his strategic leadership and courageous command during Operation Bunyān Marsūs, which led to a decisive national defense victory.
The decision was made during a high-level federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister congratulated the nation on the remarkable success in the “Battle for Truth”, lauding the armed forces for foiling the enemy’s aggressive ambitions and securing the nation’s sovereignty.
Unanimous Cabinet Approval for Promotion
The cabinet approved the elevation of General Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) in acknowledgment of his exceptional wartime leadership, which played a crucial role in countering and defeating the enemy’s assault during the unprovoked Indian offensive on the night of May 6–7, 2025.
According to the official statement, the Indian military initiated an unjustified and aggressive attack, targeting civilians in Pakistan, including women and children. In response, General Munir led the armed forces with extraordinary resolve and unified coordination, delivering a bold and effective counteroffensive.
The cabinet praised his leadership, noting that under his command, Pakistan achieved a historic military victory, and safeguarded its national integrity with unmatched bravery and professionalism. Following the cabinet’s endorsement, Prime Minister Sharif met with President Asif Ali Zardari to secure final approval for the promotion.
Air Chief’s Service Extended
In a separate but significant move, the cabinet also approved the extension of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu’s tenure, citing his vital contributions to national defense and his continued leadership of the Pakistan Air Force during this critical period.
State Honors for National Heroes
The cabinet also resolved to confer high-level civilian and military awards on the officers, soldiers, veterans, and citizens who rendered distinguished services during Operation Bunyān Marsūs. These honors will recognize acts of bravery, dedication, and service in safeguarding the nation’s peace and security.
This announcement reflects the government’s strong resolve to uphold the sacrifices of the armed forces and reinforce national unity in the face of external threats.
