Berlin — The German federal government has formally authorized the export of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey, marking a significant advancement in bilateral defense cooperation and Turkey’s military modernization plans. The decision was confirmed by Spiegel following a closed-door approval from Germany’s powerful Federal Security Council.  This approval clears the path for Turkey to acquire the fourth-generation multi-role combat aircraft.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, one of the most advanced fighter jets in Europe, is manufactured by a consortium involving Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain. The aircraft is jointly produced by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.

Turkey has been in ongoing talks with the Eurofighter consortium in recent years to bolster its air superiority capabilities, especially after being removed from the U.S. F-35 program.

The delivery of these jets is expected to deepen NATO defense cooperation, as both Germany and Turkey are key alliance members. The deal also indicates a renewed sense of trust and collaboration between Berlin and Ankara amid past diplomatic friction.

While the timeline for delivery and final contract details have yet to be disclosed, defense analysts expect the deal to include technology transfers and long-term maintenance arrangements.
