Romina Khurshid Alam, Pakistan’s Coordinator for Climate Change, has called for Germany’s technical assistance in advancing the country’s climate action strategies and promoting a shift to clean energy sources. In a meeting with a German delegation led by Christiane Amari from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Alam stressed the urgency of enhancing cooperation between the two nations in tackling climate change.

The talks focused on addressing Pakistan’s climate vulnerabilities, including severe flooding, droughts, and other environmental crises. Alam emphasized the importance of international collaboration in mitigating climate change’s impacts, especially for nations like Pakistan that are highly susceptible due to their geographical and socio-economic circumstances. Pakistan has committed to climate action through the National Climate Change Policy and the Pakistan Climate Change Act, aligning with the Paris Agreement’s goals.

Germany’s Amari expressed support for Pakistan’s efforts, recognizing the nation’s proactive stance on climate issues and underlining the need for continued cooperation to share knowledge, technology, and resources. The meeting highlighted the importance of integrating climate adaptation into national policies while ensuring the transition to a sustainable, green economy.

Both sides also discussed the necessity of expanding climate financing, with a focus on helping local communities vulnerable to climate impacts. New partnerships in water management, clean energy, and glacier protection were also proposed. Further collaboration was deemed essential to meet global climate targets while simultaneously improving the lives of those most affected by climate change.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, Ahmed Atteeq Anwar, also participated in the discussions, advocating for incorporating climate education in school curricula and promoting environmental stewardship through activities like tree planting. He emphasized the vital role media and social platforms play in inspiring the youth to take action.

Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change, highlighted the investment potential in Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly for green skills development, and stressed the role of German private companies in advancing climate adaptation, food security, and nature-based solutions in industries like construction and cement.
