Ghana Parliament Increases Sentence for Same-Sex Acts, Criminalizes LGBTQ Support
Ghana’s parliament has approved a controversial bill that increases the maximum prison sentence for same-sex acts from three to five years and criminalizes any form of support for LGBTQ activities.
The bill, originally introduced in 2024 but delayed due to legal challenges, was reintroduced by lawmakers on February 25. It now imposes penalties on individuals or organizations that promote, sponsor, or advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
Supporters of the legislation argue that it reflects Ghanaian cultural and moral values, while human rights activists warn that it will fuel discrimination and violence against LGBTQ individuals.
The law’s impact on Ghana’s international relations remains a concern, with financial experts cautioning that it could jeopardize billions in funding from the World Bank and IMF. President John Dramani Mahama has yet to sign the bill, leaving its final implementation uncertain.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with LGBTQ activists vowing to continue their fight for equality despite the increasing legal and social pressures.
