The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is being marked today, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinians in their pursuit of dignity, justice, and the right to self-determination.
First recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977, this day serves as a platform for the international community to reaffirm its support for Palestinian rights and freedoms.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a heartfelt address, stated, “As we observe this day, we are reminded of how far we remain from achieving peace, justice, and self-determination for Palestinians. The global community must work harder to address their legitimate aspirations.”
Guterres called for immediate measures to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the millions affected in Gaza, underscoring the critical role of UNRWA in alleviating their suffering.
A special session of the UN committee was held on November 26, where Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” She demanded an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access.
She reiterated the UN’s call for ending the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and emphasized progressing toward a two-state solution as outlined in UN resolutions and international law.
The observance comes at a critical juncture as Gaza faces unprecedented challenges, and global efforts to bring stability to the region remain fragmented. The International Day of Solidarity underscores the urgency of a unified response to address one of the world’s longest-standing conflicts.
