LOS ANGELES — California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of inciting division and “hoping for chaos,” as National Guard troops were deployed to Los Angeles in response to mounting protests across the city.
The protests, sparked by social unrest and tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and federal rhetoric, led to heightened security measures. In a press briefing late Sunday, Newsom condemned Trump’s public statements, claiming they “pour gasoline on a fire” at a time when leadership should promote calm and unity.
The California National Guard was activated over the weekend following demonstrations that escalated in several parts of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities reported scattered clashes and property damage, though no major injuries were confirmed.
Guard members were stationed around government buildings and key infrastructure sites to deter further disruption. The Los Angeles Police Department also increased patrols in protest-prone neighborhoods.
Newsom did not hold back in his criticism of Trump’s response to recent unrest. “He wants conflict, not solutions,” the governor stated. “At a time when we need leadership rooted in responsibility and truth, he’s hoping for chaos.”
The former president, who is campaigning for re-election, has repeatedly criticized Democratic-led states for their handling of civil unrest and border issues.
With the 2024 presidential election approaching, political tensions continue to rise nationwide. Trump’s influence on protest dynamics, particularly in urban centers like Los Angeles, has become a growing concern for state leaders.
Governor Newsom, seen as a potential future presidential contender, is increasingly vocal in opposing Trump’s agenda and messaging.
Newsom urged Californians to remain peaceful and engaged through democratic means. “We are stronger when we stand together,” he said. “We must reject chaos and division in all forms.”
