GAZA/DOHA — Efforts to broker a Gaza ceasefire suffered a major setback this week as Hamas confirmed its top negotiators have left Doha following a breakdown in indirect talks with Israel. The delegation is now headed to Türkiye for consultations, according to a senior Hamas official.
A source from the movement told AFP that a “high-level Hamas leadership delegation,” led by Mohammed Darwish, head of Hamas’s leadership council, and Khalil al-Hayya, head of the negotiating team, departed Qatar’s capital for Istanbul on Tuesday. The team is expected to meet with Turkish officials to discuss the latest developments in the now-stalled ceasefire efforts.
Negotiators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States had been mediating indirect talks between Hamas and Israeli officials for over two weeks in a bid to end the ongoing conflict and secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.
However, the process unraveled last week when both Israeli and American envoys withdrew from the talks. Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Middle East envoy, squarely blamed Hamas for the impasse and hinted that Washington is now exploring “alternative options.”
One of the main sticking points in the latest discussions was the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Bassem Naim, a senior member of Hamas’s political bureau, had earlier confirmed that this issue remained unresolved.
Despite mounting international pressure, Israel continues to resist calls for a ceasefire, citing security concerns and accusing global bodies of bias. On Tuesday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar denounced the push for a truce as “a distorted campaign of international pressure” that would allow Hamas to remain in control of Gaza.
“It’s not going to happen, regardless of the pressure applied,” Saar said firmly during a press briefing.
Meanwhile, UN-backed experts have issued stark warnings that Gaza is on the brink of famine, further intensifying calls for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access.
