Hamas Examining Israel’s Response to US-Backed Ceasefire Proposal for Gaza
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
JERUSALEM – Hamas has confirmed it is thoroughly reviewing Israel’s formal response to a US-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza, though it criticized the plan for failing to meet Palestinian “just and legitimate demands.”
According to Hamas officials, the draft agreement, while under examination, appears more favorable to Israel than prior negotiations. Despite reservations, discussions continue as regional and international stakeholders push for progress.
The White House announced Thursday that Israel had agreed to the proposed truce. A spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed that Israel had signed off, though she did not disclose full details of the plan.
A draft obtained by Reuters outlines a 60-day ceasefire, the release of 28 Israeli hostages – both living and deceased – within the first week, and the freeing of 125 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences, along with the return of 180 Palestinian bodies.
The plan is reportedly guaranteed by former US President Donald Trump and coordinated with mediators Egypt and Qatar. Humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza would begin immediately after Hamas formally accepts the deal.

A final provision requires Hamas to release the remaining 30 hostages once a permanent ceasefire is in place. However, the agreement lacks any explicit Israeli commitment to end the war in Gaza, a sticking point for Palestinian negotiators.
