Doha — Senior Hamas leaders who were targeted in Israel’s recent airstrike on the group’s compound in Qatar were notably absent from the funeral of the victims, according to sources cited by Asharq Al-Awsat.
The funeral, held on Thursday at Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque in Doha, was attended by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, state media confirmed. Hamas announced that five members of the movement were killed in the attack, including the son of exiled Gaza leader and top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.
Hamas sources revealed that leaders residing in Qatar, who were not present at the meeting targeted by Israel, also did not attend the funeral. No explanation was provided for their absence.
Photographs released by Hamas, however, showed the presence of political bureau members Osama Hamdan and Izzat al-Rishq at the ceremony.
The Israeli strike in Doha earlier this week left several senior Hamas figures wounded, one of them critically, according to group sources. These officials are reportedly receiving treatment under tight security at a private hospital in the Qatari capital. Their identities remain undisclosed due to security concerns.
The rare strike outside Palestinian territories has drawn international attention, with analysts warning that it could complicate Qatar’s mediation efforts in the Gaza conflict and further escalate regional tensions.
