GAZA CITY — Senior officials of Hamas have strongly rebuffed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that the group was not genuinely interested in a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement with Israel. Trump’s statement came shortly after the United States and Israel withdrew from nearly three weeks of indirect talks hosted in Doha, Qatar.
Trump accused Hamas on Friday of undermining progress in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, stating that the group “didn’t really want” a resolution. The talks, mediated indirectly by Qatari officials, ended Thursday with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff recalling Washington’s team, citing a lack of sincerity from Hamas.
However, Hamas spokesperson Taher al-Nunu dismissed the accusations, calling them “surprising and baseless.”
“These remarks are shocking, particularly since we had seen positive developments in several negotiation files,” al-Nunu said in a statement to AFP.
He stressed that Hamas had not been notified of any breakdown in discussions and remained committed to achieving a ceasefire.
While not a direct member of the negotiation team, senior Hamas politburo official Izzat al-Rishq emphasized that the group had demonstrated “clear flexibility” during talks.
“The real obstacle to any progress is Netanyahu’s government, which continues to block and deceive,” he stated.
Both officials accused the United States of showing bias toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that such favoritism undermines U.S. credibility as a neutral mediator.
“We urge the U.S. to adopt a more balanced approach and hold Israel accountable for derailing the dialogue,” said al-Nunu.
The failed negotiations mark another setback in efforts to halt nearly 22 months of continuous fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas. Despite multiple international efforts, including those by Qatar and Egypt, a lasting truce remains elusive.
With Gaza’s humanitarian crisis worsening and civilian casualties mounting, diplomatic pressure is intensifying on all parties to return to the negotiating table.
