Hamas to Release Six Hostages on Saturday; Bodies of Bibas Family Set for Return
Hamas has announced the planned release of six Israeli hostages on Saturday, while the bodies of Shiri Bibas and her two children, Ariel (4) and Kfir (1), will be returned on Thursday. The Bibas family, who were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October 7 attack, had been held in Gaza for over four months.
The announcement has left the Bibas family in distress, as Israeli authorities have yet to confirm the return of their remains. Initially, Hamas was expected to release only three living hostages this week, but the group has now agreed to free all six remaining captives from the first phase of the current hostage negotiations.
This latest development is part of ongoing negotiations facilitated by Qatar and Egypt, aimed at securing the release of more captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The agreement, which has seen phased hostage releases, is expected to lead to further discussions on a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Israel has reiterated its commitment to securing the freedom of all hostages and has vowed to continue military operations in Gaza until their return. Meanwhile, international mediators continue to push for a broader resolution to end hostilities in the region.
Alongside hostage negotiations, discussions on the post-war governance of Gaza remain contentious. Israel has suggested alternative governance plans, but Arab nations have rejected proposals that do not ensure full Palestinian control over the territory. The diplomatic rift has complicated efforts to establish a long-term solution for Gaza’s administration.
